🌴 A Little Slice of Tifton History! 🛎️
Long before road trips meant cruising down I-75, travelers heading to Florida often passed through Tifton along U.S. Highway 41. And for those needing a place to rest, the Town Terrace Motel was ready to welcome them!
Built in the 1940s as Van Gundy’s Motor Court, this beloved landmark became known to generations of locals as the “Pink Motel.” Its owners, Violet Van Gundy and her brother Jack, helped make it a memorable part of Tifton’s roadside history. And here’s a fun twist: Violet was once a child performer known as “Baby Violet” in the Our Gang comedies, later known as The Little Rascals! 🎬
With its distinctive sign, vintage charm, and stories spanning generations, the Town Terrace Motel is a reminder of a time when the journey was just as memorable as the destination.

Before traffic lights, paved roads, and the occasional “Can you believe how much traffic there is?” complaint, Love Avenue was looking a little different! 😂
This 1904 glimpse of Tifton shows a wide, unpaved Love Avenue lined with beautiful homes, early businesses, towering telephone poles—and even a horse-drawn wagon making its way down the street. 🐴
No rush-hour traffic. No parking meters. No GPS saying, “recalculating.” Just horse power, good architecture, and a growing little town with plenty of room to roam. ❤️

A little piece of Tifton history… ❤️
Take a stroll down Main Street in Tifton as it looked decades ago—when the lights of the Tift Theatre beckoned moviegoers, and Cox Drug Store was a familiar gathering place downtown.
And look closely at that theatre marquee! 🎬 It appears to be advertising Lady of Burlesque, starring Barbara Stanwyck—a 1943 film that gives us an especially wonderful clue to when this photograph was taken. What a fun little time capsule!
Just next door, you can see the familiar Cox Drug Company sign. Cox Drug wasn`t simply a pharmacy in Tifton. It was the kind of old-fashioned downtown drugstore that also functioned as a social gathering place. A 1919 Tifton record lists Cox Drug Co. as both a cigarette dealer and soda fountain, confirming that the business had a fountain as part of its operation.
For generations of Tifton children, a trip to Cox Drugs meant more than picking up a prescription. It could mean stopping in for a hot dog, a cold Coca-Cola, or a sweet treat—the kind of simple pleasures that turned an ordinary trip downtown into a cherished memory. 🌭🥤
Look closely at this wonderful old scene: the vintage cars, the grand storefronts, the theatre marquee and the bustling businesses that made Main Street the heart of the community.
Before shopping centers and interstate exits, this was where Tifton came to shop, meet friends, catch a movie, grab a bite and make memories. ✨
And isn`t it wonderful to think that someone standing on this very street in the early 1940s may have been on their way to see Barbara Stanwyck on the big screen, while just down the block someone else was enjoying a hot dog and Coke at Cox Drugs?
A charming glimpse into Tifton of yesterday—and a reminder that sometimes the sweetest memories are the simplest ones. ❤️
